Socceroos winger Martin Boyle says his axing from Hibernian’s first team was the “kick up the backside” he needed.
Winger Boyle made a triumphant weekend return to Hibs’ starting 11, scoring a goal and setting up two others in his side’s 3-1 Scottish Premiership away win over Aberdeen.
“The competition in the team is really high, and if you’re not performing then I’m sitting on the bench,” man-of-the-match Boyle told Hibs TV after his first start since early last month.
“It was the kick up the backside I needed. I’ll always keep my spirits high, keep working hard, and thankfully I got my chance and took it.
“I was so keen to get my shirt back. I always want to contribute goals and assists, and thankfully I managed that.
“I was unselfish and there were people in the box to score the goals.
“The fans were absolutely brilliant. It’s a hard time of year for them to spend their money to come here, so I’m glad we could put a smile on their face.”

Boyle’s Socceroos teammate Lewis Miller was a second-half substitute for Hibs, while another Australian, Olyroos midfielder Nectarios Triantis, played a full game for the winners.
Elsewhere in Scotland, Socceroos pair Kye Rowles and Cameron Devlin played full matches for Hearts in their 2-1 win over St. Johnstone.
The victory lifted Hearts off the bottom of the Scottish Premiership ladder.
In Germany’s Bundesliga, Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine provided the assist for St. Pauli’s only goal – scored by Johannes Eggestein – in their 1-0 won over VfB Stuttgart.
