Socceroos stars Aaron Mooy and Massimo Luongo make move to new clubs on transfer deadline day

Aaron Mooy will link up with a Socceroos teammate after making the move back to the Premier League. But he wasn’t the only Aussie star to hit the headlines in the final hours of transfers.

Mooy, Luongo making moves?

Socceroos midfielder Aaron Mooy has moved to Premier League club Brighton from Huddersfield on a season-long loan.

Mooy becomes Albion’s fifth major summer signing and means the 28-year-old playmaker will link-up with fellow Aussie international Mat Ryan at the south coast club.

Mooy is set to make his Seagulls debut during this weekend’s Premier League clash against Watford.

Brighton head coach Graham Potter is happy to have Mooy on board.

“We are delighted to welcome Aaron to the club. He has played very well over the past two seasons in the Premier League, and will bring a different option and added competition to our midfield,” he said.

“He’s been a talisman for Huddersfield in recent seasons with his performances on the field; and he’s proved to be an excellent professional both on and off the pitch.

“I’m looking forward to working with him, and he is another good addition to our squad ahead of the new season.”

After winning promotion from the Championship with Huddersfield in 2017, Mooy scored seven goals in 65 top-flight appearances before the West Yorkshire club were relegated in May.

He played the full 90 minutes earlier this week as the Terriers’ return to the second tier began with a 2-1 home defeat to Derby.

Meanwhile, Mooy’s Socceroos teammate Massimo Luongo has joined Sheffield Wednesday from fellow Championship side QPR in a busy climax to the English transfer window.

Former Tottenham junior Luongo, who has 42 caps with the Socceroos, has moved to Wednesday for an undisclosed fee, becoming the Yorkshire club’s fifth signing of the closed season.

“Credit to QPR and Wednesday - I’m just pleased to get it over the line,” the 26-year-old said.

“I think it’s always been in the works over pre-season but it came around quickly, and I had to get up here and get things done.

“I’ve come up here and seen how the club is run, the direction they are going in and the players they’ve got, and that is what got me excited.”
