TOTTENHAM boss Mauricio Pochettino is confident his young squad will be ready to break Man City, Chelsea and Man United’s monopoly on the English Premier League title in years to come.
THE emerging Tottenham side coming to Melbourne next July will be ready to break Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United’s monopoly on the English Premier League title, according to its manager.
Meanwhile Melbourne Victory’s Archie Thompson said his young teammates will relish the chance to take on superclub Juventus when it makes its International Champions Cup debut.
Juventus kicks off the 2016 ICC tournament against Victory on July 23 before Tottenham debuts against Juventus on July 26 at the MCG, with a third European team to be confirmed.
Spurs have not won the league since 1961, but Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is building a side for the future, headlined by three of English soccer’s best young stars in Harry Kane, Delle Alli and Eric Dier.
“After 18 months we have put the basis for sure in the future to win some titles,’’ Pochettino said.
“We have the youngest team in the Premier League so sometimes we have to expect that we have bad days.
“We have been consistent from the beginning but different moments will be tough for them and now they need to have the tools to move forward.”
Thompson, who returned for Victory in last night’s Melbourne derby, said the Liverpool extravaganza in 2013 was a turning point.
“Victory versus Liverpool at the MCG was the catalyst to have these clubs come from overseas because they see how much we love football,” Thompson said.
“The atmosphere last year was amazing at the games, so to actually have an Australian team involved will be fantastic for our code.”
