Outrage as handball ‘disgrace’ rocks English Premier League
Even the beneficiaries of a controversial call were gobsmacked as the EPL descended into farce with a “disgraceful” decision that sparked outrage.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said the stoppage time penalty that allowed his side to snatch a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Sunday was “nonsense” in another Premier League clash decided by the controversial interpretation of the handball rule.
Spurs had just Lucas Moura’s goal to show for a dominant first-half display and were made to pay when Eric Dier was penalised after a VAR review as the ball brushed his arm in challenge with Andy Carroll.
Callum Wilson converted the penalty with Newcastle’s first shot on target, prompting Spurs coach Jose Mourinho to march down the tunnel before the full-time whistle had been blown.
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said on Saturday the spate of penalties being awarded for contentious handball decisions was “ruining” football.
“I can understand why Spurs will go berserk and Roy Hodgson reacted like he did. It is a total nonsense,” said Bruce. “We should be jumping through hoops, but I would be devastated if that was us.”
Mourinho complained that Tottenham were not being treated equally to other clubs after a similar incident when the ball struck Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles on the arm was not punished.
“We know there are boxes and boxes, there are boxes for Tottenham and boxes for other teams. So we kept them away from the box and, on one occasion we couldn’t, we lost two points,” said Mourinho.
“We deserve the points and deserve respect. At this moment we don’t have the points and we don’t have the respect.”
Liverpool legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports: “It’s an absolute disgrace. An absolute joke.
“Eric Dier jumps for the ball, has no control of where his arms are going to be, it was a header half-a-yard away from him, hits him on the back of his arm, he has no idea what’s going on. This is a joke.
“Whether it’s the Premier League, the FA, FIFA … whoever is involved in this, stop it, because you’re ruining football for everybody.”

For all their complaints, Mourinho’s men will also have to reflect on not taking their chances before the break in front of the watching Gareth Bale.
The Welshman was all smiles in the stand, but was still not fit enough to make his second Spurs debut due to a knee injury, while Mourinho left Dele Alli out of his 18-man squad completely for the second straight league game.
Karl Darlow in the visitors’ goal was busy from the third minute as he clawed out Giovani lo Celso’s free-kick and got up to block Harry Kane’s follow-up effort.
The England captain tested the Newcastle shot-stopper again with a diving header moments later.
Kane provided four assists for Son Heung-min in a 5-2 thrashing of Southampton last weekend and was the creator when Spurs did finally break the deadlock on 25 minutes.
Moura’s place is most at risk when Bale is fit to return, but reminded Mourinho of the threat he can post by bundling home his first Premier League goal since December from Kane’s low cross.
Son then hit the woodwork twice with shots from outside the box, while Darlow made another fantastic save from Kane’s long-range effort to crucially keep Newcastle’s deficit down to just one before halftime.
Spurs’ attacking flow was interrupted in the second-half without Son, who was replaced at halftime and is now an injury doubt for Tottenham’s hectic week ahead as they face Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday, Maccabi Haifa in Europa League qualifying on Thursday and travel to Manchester United in the Premier League next Sunday.
Yet, there was still precious little from Newcastle for Tottenham to fear at the other end until the dramatic finale.
Indeed, the closest the visitors came to scoring before the penalty was when Ben Davies smashed a clearance into his teammate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the ball ricocheted wide a minute from time.
But on a weekend already marked by complaints over the handball law, Spurs were stung despite Dier clearly having no intent to handle the ball.
Hugo Lloris got a hand to Wilson’s penalty, but could not keep it out, prompting Mourinho to storm off in disgust.
VARDY HELPS LEICESTER DEMOLISH MAN CITY
Elsewhere, Jamie Vardy’s hat-trick dealt an early blow to Manchester City’s hopes of wrestling back the Premier League title as they conceded three penalties in a 5-2 defeat to Leicester.
City were without a host of first-team regulars due to injury and coronavirus infections, but the deficiencies at the back that undid their title defence last season were again exposed by the pace and finishing prowess of Vardy as a Pep Guardiola team conceded five goals for the first time in his coaching career.
Leicester stormed to the top of the league, but had to come from behind to extend their perfect start to the season as Riyad Mahrez’s stunning strike against his former club opened the scoring after just four minutes.
“The problem was we put extra pressure on ourselves to score the second and third,” said Guardiola. “We need to be more calm, we don’t have the players to attack the box that we need.
“I am not going to give up, I am going to try to find solutions.”
City are reportedly close to signing Benfica centre-back Ruben Dias and the need for defensive cover was obvious as Vardy tore apart the experimental pairing of Eric Garcia and Nathan Ake.
“We set up to infuriate them and it has worked a treat,” said Vardy. “We knew if we stuck to our plan we would get some chances.”
It was the more experienced Kyle Walker who was at fault to start Leicester’s revival as he brought down Vardy, who slammed home the resulting penalty.
The former England international then brilliantly flicked home Timothy Castagne’s cross and drew another penalty from Garcia’s naive challenge.
Vardy this time slotted low past Ederson and James Maddison killed off a jaded City with a sumptuous curling effort into the top corner.
Ake pulled a goal back six minutes from time from Mahrez’s corner, but after Vardy had made way, another idiotic City challenge, this time form Benjamin Mendy, allowed Your Tielemans to score Leicester’s third penalty.
