The United defender and the Newcastle striker squared up off the ball five minutes before half-time in Wednesday’s Premier League fixture.

Evans appeared to launch spit at Cisse as the Senegal international rose from the turf after the pair tussled for the ball with the game goalless.

Cisse stretched out to grab his rival in response and seemed to aim saliva back in Evans’ direction.

Afterwards, Louis van Gaal said: “I did not see that (incident) from the bench, but I cannot imagine he would do that.”

Newcastle head coach John Carver said: “You can’t do it can you? It’s one of the worst things in football. But I can’t comment on it, I just know there was a fracas on the halfway line and I need to have a look at it.”

Referee Anthony Taylor did not book either player, but Newcastle won the free-kick for the initial tangle.

Given the whistleblower missed the incident on the field, both players could face retrospective punishment from the Football Association.
