Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has hit out at the “fragile foundations” at his English Premier League club as the side’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City ruled them out of the coveted Champions League.

The Aussie coach took charge of the club this season with his main goal being to secure a top four finish in the Premier League and earn a spot in the Champions League.

He needed a win against reigning premiers and competition leaders City this morning in order to keep his hopes alive.

Fans hadn’t been as excited about the prospect, instead preferring City to keep control and keep rivals Arsenal from taking out the league for the first time in 20 years.

Postecoglou even had a verbal altercation with one fan who had been calling for him to throw the match from the grandstand.

City have held onto the title for three years running - their win means they are two points clear of Arsenal going into the final round.

Postecoglou was disappointed in the result making it clear he didn’t care about the rivalry who ultimately won the title.

“Maybe I’m out of step,” Postecolgou said post match.

“But I just don’t care. I just want to win and I want to be successful at this football club, that is why I was bought.

“What other people, how they want to feel and what their priorities are, it’s of zero interest to me. I know what’s important to build a winning team and that’s what I need to concentrate on.”

Postecoglou had said this season was about building the foundations so he could challenge for the title.

The manager said the lead up to this important game had proven things were not as strong as he thought.

“I think the last 48 hours have revealed to me the foundations are fairly fragile,” Postecoglou said.

“That’s what I feel. The last 48 hours has revealed a fair bit to me. That’s alright, that just means I’ve got to go back to the drawing board with some things. Outside (the club), inside, it’s been an interesting exercise.

“I probably misread the situation as to what I think is important in our endeavour to becoming a winning team, but that’s okay, that’s why I’m here.”

Postecoglou’s comments regarding Tottenham’s “fragile” foundations has raised concerns about what really is going on behind the scenes at the Spurs, with former Liverpool striker Michael Owen concerned the comments are proof that “there’s certainly something” that has rankled the Australian in recent times.

“I’m desperate for him to reveal a little bit more and I’m scratching my head to think he’s referring to then, but he doesn’t seem happy, does he,” Owen told Premier League Productions.

“I wonder what that can be, whether he’s had a meeting with the people above, if he’s started looking ahead to next season already, which would surprise me if he had. That’s a head scratcher, that one.

“But there’s certainly something that’s affected him and annoying him at the moment. That will obviously come out in the hours and days to come, but not a happy man.”

It was a solid match, with the score remaining locked at the end of the first half. City’s Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 51st minute - with a penalty in the 90th minute cementing the win.

“We had some decent chances,” Postecoglou said.

“It’s been the story of our season, where we just haven’t capitalised on big moments and lacked some discipline in our football.

“But again that’s stuff that we just need to keep trying to improve.”

Postecoglou and his Tottenahm side are due to play in Australia, against fellow EPL club Newcastle in Melbourne on May 22 at the MCG, as part of Global Football Week.
