Manchester United set to show who’s boss, with a new 10-year Nike kit deal worth more than $1b

STRUGGLING Manchester United set to show its rivals who’s the boss, with a new 10-year Nike kit deal worth more than $1b.

Missing out on Champions League qualification would be a financial nightmare for most clubs — but Manchester United isn’t most clubs.

The Red Devils might be underperforming on the pitch but they continue to soar off it, with Old Trafford set to strike a world-record kit deal with Nike worth more than $1 billion.

The Mirror is reporting that the reigning Premier League champion will make a statement that the club remains the biggest in the world, banking more than $100m a year over the course of a 10-year agreement with the US sportswear giant — almost double Real Madrid’s deal with adidas.

United’s current Nike deal is worth around $43m a season, less than Arsenal, Liverpool, Real and Barcelona.

And with a shirt sponsorship deal with Chevrolet, worth $65m a year, set to start next season, it is clear that United remain the game’s biggest financial force, regardless of the short-term worries on the field and will provide under-fire manager David Moyes with a significant war chest with which to rebuild his squad during the off-season.

After a troubled start to his reign, in which the club failed to land any of its big transfer targets, United is on course to miss the Champions League for the first time since season 1995/96 but United chief executive Ed Woodward has previously indicated the manager will have the financial backing to compete with his rivals “in a way we perhaps haven’t seen in recent years”.
