FRANK Juric is judging his time with Adelaide United by the vast improvement in gloveman Paul Izzo in the past two years before starting his new gig at debut A-League club Western United.
The former Socceroos gloveman turned goalkeeper coach was a victim of the Reds A-League coaching staff clean out after Marco Kurz’s two-year tenure wasn’t extended despite his success.
Juric ended his contract on a sour note and will be appointed on a two-year deal at his new club.
Juric, 45, is angered by an accusation of manhandling a security guard before reportedly barging into the referees’ room to verbally abuse match officials after the shootout semi-final loss to Perth Glory 10 days ago.
The controversy started when it’s alleged referee Alex King tossed a coin as per FIFA laws of the game to determine which end the shootout would take place.
King, according to sources, called the colour yellow and pointed towards the northern end of HBF Park, which riled United captain Isaias.
“It was blown out of proportion and the accusations are incorrect,’’ Juric said.
“I asked the referee about why the shootout happened at that end and that was it, I haven’t heard anything else about it from Football Federation Australia, it was a fair question.
“I went to the referees’ change-rooms to clarify what had happened and I was kicked out of the rooms, I didn’t even speak to the referees.
“The manhandling stuff is false and the abuse, me abusing a referee, it’s completely wrong.”
FFA has been contacted for comment.
Juric will start his new gig alongside former Adelaide centre back and ex-Wellington Phoenix coach Mark Rudan once his appointment is officially announced.
The new club will have four men with Reds connections — Juric, Rudan, Ersan Gulum and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos — and another South Australian, ex-Adelaide City NPL attacker Valentino Yuel.
Juric said he gave Adelaide United an opportunity to renew his two-year contract beyond Kurz’s reign. “I wanted to give them a chance to talk to me about staying on (with Adelaide), but it never got that far,’’ Juric said.
“So now I’m looking forward to working with Western United and the goalkeepers they have, Filip Kurto from Phoenix and ex-Melbourne City teenager James Delianov.
“I enjoyed working with Paul (Izzo) and he’s also coming along with experience now.”
Juric was planning a European holiday before starting his new job but delayed his departure to be at the funeral of his former teammate David Cervinski in Geelong on Friday.
The pair shared dressing rooms at Melbourne Knights.
“He won four championships two at Melbourne Knights and two at Wollongong Wolves,’’ Juric said.
“I have known him for more than 25 years and we kept in contact with each other, last time I saw him was about six months ago, I expect there will be a big turnout of soccer people to farewell him.”
