Salisbury United’s sports co-ordinator Ben Foat is confident of fielding a senior 11 but whether it will happen on Saturday is uncertain after a players’ exodus rocked the club on Tuesday night.
Foat said the club had asked Football Federation SA to postpone the State League 1 clash against Modbury Jets at Jets Park after 10 players walked away from the club.
If Salisbury United is unable to field a team against the Jets the club is staring at forfeiting the clash which would mean a 3-0 loss and a $1000 fine.
“Whether that happens this week or next week it will definitely happen,’’ Foat said when asked if the club would be able to field a senior side.
The 20-year Salisbury legend said the club isn’t considering fielding its reserves or under-18s in the Jets senior fixture fearing the clash would do players more harm than good to morale when the bottom club takes on the league leader.
Foat believes that by Salisbury’s next clash against Seaford away on April 13 the club would have had ample time to have recruited a competitive squad to replace players.
With Foat upbeat believing the club’s fortunes will turn around FFSA chief executive Michael Carter is expecting all of Saturday’s scheduled Salisbury matches to go ahead.
“Football Federation SA has been in regular contact with the Salisbury United football club over the last two days,’’ he said.
“Our position is that the senior, reserves and under 18 games against the Modbury Jets will proceed as planned.”
Salisbury via its Facebook page confirmed the exodus.
The club posted: “the committee is still in conversations with a number of players from the team and are looking at options for the playing list and games in the upcoming weeks.
“We have made contact with new players looking for an opportunity.”
