Adelaide City legend Damian Mori is in the running to become the new coach of Adelaide Comets’ NPL side.

It’s understood Mori on Sunday was summoned to a meeting with Comets chairman Jim Tsouvalas and high ranking officials of the club to discuss whether he wanted the job after coach Theo Tsiounis resigned.

Tsiounis quit four rounds into the new season after star-studded Comets lost 4-1 to MetroStars on Saturday, Tsouvalas said.

“After the game he (Tsiounis) spoke to the players, it’s been building up,’’ Tsouvalas said.

“He’s now the deputy principal at Roma Mitchell Secondary College (Gepps Cross) and it got a bit much for him, he’s a perfectionist and doing that and coaching the senior team, in the end it got too much.

“He’s still going to be involved with the club coaching his child in the juniors, the under 6s and if we need any help he’s still going to be around the place.

“He was very honest and said he was exhausted.”

Tsouvalas is expecting to meet the Comets squad on Monday night at its Ellis Park headquarters to discuss the future.

Tsouvalas said the club had been talking to “three or four” potential coaching candidates.

The club would be making a decision within a week.

Assistant coach and Comets life member Tony Galanopoulos and Dave Martin will most likely be charged with coaching the seniors on Saturday when they meet South Adelaide at O'Sullivan Beach.

Tsiounis took control of the Comets coaching gig in mid 2015 when Jim Karatzas quit.

He was a former technical director of the club before taking Comets to the national FFA Cup round of 16 stage last year after winning the state title beating Croydon Kings 2-1 in the regional final.

Mori last September stopped coaching Adelaide City, four days after a grand final 1-0 loss to Campbelltown City at Hindmarsh after 13 years as boss.
