FULHAM missed the chance to climb out of the relegation zone after surrendering a two-goal lead to Hull City, but the news was better for fellow Premier League strugglers Swansea City thanks to a stunning goal by midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
Hull came from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.
A dreary, scoreless first half prompted Fulham coach Felix Magath to substitute in Ashkan Dejagah and Kieran Richardson, and they inspired two quick goals.
Eight minutes into the second half, Dejagah curved home the opener, then Richardson’s cross was glanced in by Fernando Amorebieta.
Out of nowhere, Nikica Jelavic scored off a rebound to put Hull back in the contest in the 75 minute. Hull then hit the posts twice before Shane Long headed in Sone Aluko’s cross three minutes from time for the draw, and leave Fulham 18th in the league with two games left.
“It was very disappointing,” said Fulham manager Felix Magath. “If you are leading 2-0 at home, you have to see it through.”
In Wales, Jonjo Shelvey produced a goal of the season contender to inspire Swansea to a 4-1 rout of Aston Villa that all but secured their Premier League survival.
Former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey beat Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan with a stunning 45-yard volley at the Liberty Stadium to put his side 2-1 ahead in the first half.
Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony had opened the scoring for Swansea before Gabriel Agbonlahor levelled.
Inspired by Shelvey’s moment of magic, Swansea dominated the second half and were rewarded with Pablo Hernandez’s strike before Bony added to his tally with a stoppage-time penalty.
West Bromwich Albion moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win at home to West Ham United, Saido Berahino scoring when he turned in Morgan Amalfitano’s centre in the 11th minute.
“I think that we need to win one of our final three games to be safe,” said West Brom manager Pepe Mel.
Tottenham Hotspur moved to within three points of fifth-placed Everton with a 1-0 win at Stoke City.
Defender Danny Rose scored the only goal of the game, nodding home a nice header after good lead-up work by striker Emannuel Adebayor in the 33rd minute.
Stoke were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Ryan Shawcross was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a studs-up challenge on Rose.
The race for the title will intensify on Sunday when leaders Liverpool face second-placed Chelsea, five points behind, at Anfield.
Third-placed Manchester City, six points off the summit but with a game in hand on the top two, are away to Crystal Palace.
At the other end of the table there is a relegation clash when bottom-of-the-table Sunderland host fellow strugglers Cardiff City.
