Ex-Western United marksman Noah Botic scores first goal for Austria Vienna in shock Cup loss

Noah Botic is off the mark for his new European club, but his goal wasn’t enough to prevent a huge Austrian Cup upset.

Former A-League star Noah Botic has scored his first goal for Austria Vienna in his new club’s shock 3-2 Austrian Cup first-round loss to third-tier outfit ASK Voitsberg.

The ex-Western United striker, who netted 16 goals in 29 A-League appearances last season, was making his first competitive start for the Vienna-based club after coming off the bench last week in the team’s 2-0 Europa Conference League second qualifying round first-leg win over Georgian club Spaeri.

Botic was elevated to the starting team for Sunday night’s clash and equalised in first-half stoppage time after Voitsberg went ahead in the 23rd minute through Andreas Pfingstner.

German striker Maurice Malone scored to give Austria Vienna a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute.

However, Voitsberg stunned the Austrian Bundesliga club with goals in the 63rd and 65th minutes from Luka Zivanovic and substitute Martin Krienzer respectively to knock Botic’s team out of the Cup.

Also opening his goal-scoring account for his new club Dundee United was former Western Sydney Wanderers marksman Zac Sapsford, who found the back of the net in his Scottish team’s 1-0 Europa Conference League second qualifying round first-leg win over Luxembourg outfit UNA Strassen last Friday morning (AEST).

Elsewhere, Socceroos goalkeeper Joe Gauci made a costly error after coming on as a substitute for English Premier League club Aston Villa in a 2-2 weekend friendly draw with German team Eintracht Frankfurt.

The former Adelaide United gloveman, who joined Villa in February last year and spent the second half of last season on loan to English third-tier club Barnsley, was at fault for Eintracht’s equaliser in the 82nd minute.

Gauci’s poor clearance was pounced on by Eintracht, and seconds later the ball was in the back of the net from a long-distance strike from teenage substitute Ebu Bekir Is.
