Capital One Cup: Sunderland upset Chelsea in extra-time, Manchester City ease past Leicester

MARK Schwarzer's Chelsea is stunned by Sunderland in extra-time of Capital One Cup, Manchester City ease past Leicester.

KI Sung-Yeung scored an extra-time winner past Mark Schwarzer as Sunderland beat Chelsea 2-1 to reach the Capital One Cup semi-finals, while Manchester City booked their place with a 3-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Jose Mourinho's Blues took the lead early in the second half at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night and looked on course to see the last-eight tie through to a conclusion.

But Fabio Borini came off the bench to fire home an 88th-minute equaliser from a tight angle to force extra-time, and Ki then kept his cool in the area two minutes from the end of the additional period to sensationally win the tie for the Cats, who join Manchester City in the draw for the next round.

The result brought an end to Mourinho's impressive League Cup record - not including penalty shoot-outs, Chelsea had not been beaten in the competition under the Portuguese's management for the previous 15 games.

"It was just unbelievable, I didn't expect to score but I am really pleased to help the team go through,'' Ki told Sky Sports.

"This was a very hard game for us, but we didn't give up. The boys played unbelievable.''

It was a dispiriting night for Blues boss Jose Mourinho, who won the League Cup twice in his first spell in charge of the west London club but saw his fears about his shot-shy team confirmed during a lacklustre display.

"We never lost a match because we didn't play or that the opponent was stronger, it's just we don't kill opponents and we give them life,'' Mourinho said.

"Every opponent knows they can score a goal against us. We had fantastic chances to score and didn't score.''

Mourinho made eight changes to his team after the 2-1 Premier League home win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Mark Schwarzer, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, John Obi Mikel, Frank Lampard, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o all started. Branislav Ivanovic was suspended; Michael Essien, John Terry, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres dropped to the bench; while Petr Cech, Ramires and Juan Mata were all rested.

Gus Poyet made three changes to the Sunderland side that drew 0-0 at West Ham. Adam Johnson, Craig Gardner and Andrea Dossena came in, while Fabio Borini, Ki Sung-Yeung and Phil Bardsley were benched. Steven Fletcher was not involved, while Jack Colback missed out again through illness.

Aleksandar Kolarov's spectacular free-kick put City on their way, before Edin Dzeko netted either side of half-time to wrap up the win and ensure that a solitary reply from Lloyd Dyer was of scant consolation to the hosts.

It took just eight minutes for the Blues, who put six past Arsenal on Saturday, to get back on the goal trail, with Kolarov firing a 30-yard thunderbolt into the top corner past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel.

The Foxes goalkeeper helped to keep the score down as City swept forward, but he could do nothing to prevent Dzeko nodding home from close range on 41 minutes after he had been picked out by a clipped cross from James Milner.

The same combination helped City to add a third in the 53rd-minute, with Milner cutting the ball back for an unmarked Dzeko to drill low from 12 yards out.

Leicester were able to pull one back 13 minutes from time but Dyer's strike, which flicked off Vincent Kompany to beat Joe Hart at his near post, failed to spark a dramatic fight back.

The only obvious downside for City, who now have semi-finals to look forward to in January, was an injury to Pablo Zabaleta.

Manchester City progressed to the semi-finals of the knockout competition.

The Argentinian limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem early on to join fellow right-back Micah Richards on the casualty list.

Manuel Pellegrini could now have a problem in the position for a Christmas programme that includes a home clash with Liverpool on Boxing Day.

It soon became apparent that the Premier League side, for all Leicester's enthusiasm, were a cut above, even at half-pace.

Tottenham play West Ham and Stoke face Manchester United in Thursday morning (EDT)' s fixtures.
