Bailey Wright and Socceroos itching to atone horror Brazil loss at Confederations Cup

IT was the worst possible start to a meeting with the world’s best side, but Socceroos defender Bailey Wright says there’s no point dwelling on past mistakes with action imminent.

IT WAS the worst possible start to a meeting with the world’s best side, but Socceroos defender Bailey Wright put his mistake that gifted Brazil their opening goal at the MCG behind him almost as quickly as the South Americans punished it.

Australia’s final warm up game before the Confederations Cup, which gets under way for them in the early hours of Tuesday morning against world champions Germany, ended in a disappointing 4-0 loss.

Bailey gave the ball away almost from kick off to gift wrap a chance for Brazil. But he insists the chastening experience “hasn’t fazed me”.

“Mistakes can happen. If you dwell on them and let them get to you, you can continue to have a terrible 90 minutes. For me it was frustrating. But it is what it is, you put it behind you and continue on with your job.

“I’ve been in the game long enough, there’s mistakes I’ve made in my career and there’s been times when I’ve put my head down and it’s affected me massively. The more games you play the more you grow and the more you can deal with it.”

GOAL: Ange’s bid to make Roos world’s best

WARNING: Germany still a football force

The tournament opened in St Petersburg where hosts Russia over-ran rank outsiders New Zealand 2-0 in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin. With the action now under way, Wright can’t wait to get out on the park himself.

“From the moment we got here we hit the ground running, we’re ready to go,” he says from the team’s training base in Sochi.

“With the first game last night, the tournament’s started, and we’re just itching to get out on that pitch and get playing now.”

Wright perhaps more than anyone has added incentive to put on a performance after the heavy loss to the Brazilians. And sees an equally testing match up with Germany as the perfect chance to do just that.

“The game against Brazil was our last game of preparation. And when you’ve been involved in a game you’ve lost, you can’t wait to get back out on the pitch and be given the opportunity to put it right.

“We’ve got a great opportunity against the world champions Germany to do it. We know they’ll be tough but we’re looking forward to it.”

Germany have brought an experimental, squad to the competition, intent on blooding youngsters in preparation for next year’s World Cup finals, also in Russia.

Wright says the Socceroos will be looking to exploit any chinks in the German’s armour due to unfamiliarity between the players Joachim Low puts out against them, though is mindful that hungry players competing for places “sometimes can be more dangerous”.

The Socceroos will undertake their final training session with a clean bill of health across the squad before Ange Postecoglou settles on his final line up for the opening fixture.
