Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan has raised $28,000 for victims of the devastating bushfires ravaging across the Australia.

The Brighton stopper pledged to donate $500 for every save made in last weekend’s English Premier League round to the WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation emergency fund.

A total of 56 saves were made in the ten matches over the weekend with the Socceroo stopping five shots in, just two behind Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel who saved seven.

Ryan made his pledge on Instagram last week: “In light of the devastation caused by the bushfires back home, I’m donating 500 Australian dollars for every registered save by all Premier League goalkeepers across every Premier League fixture for this weekend.

“I’ve chosen to donate to the Wires wildlife rescue emergency fund. Thank you to all for your support thus far and as a nation we really do appreciate your gratitude and generosity.

“However, there continues to be homes lost, lives of both people and animals lost or in danger, along with whole communities, businesses and more. I hope we can continue in the same manner and continue to encourage and influence people into raising money for those affected.”

More than 2000 homes have been destroyed and at least 28 lives lost since the beginning of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia’s horror bushfire season.

Sportspeople from around the country have raised money for the cause including cricketing legend Shane Warne who auctioned off his famous baggy green cap for over $1 million.

Tennis and cricket stars Ash Barty, Nick Kyrgios, Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell were among more sporting greats to make donations.

Western Sydney Wanderers defender Mat Jurman has pledged to donate $20 for each pass he makes and $100 for every Wanderers goal at the their next home game against Perth Glory on Sunday night to the Australian Red Cross.
