SENEGALESE striker Baba Diawara is edging closer to an incredible Adelaide United comeback to see out the back end of his Adelaide United contract and coach Marco Kurz’s two-year tenure.
After chairman Piet van der Pol revealed via a The Advertiser exclusive interview that Diawara, 31, won’t be offered a contract extension it appears the Senegalese is poised to be fit enough to warrant selection after knee surgery in December.
Diawara could answer Kurz’s goalscoring woes given the Reds have scored just two goals in the past five matches earning two points before facing Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Sunday.
He appeared extremely fresh at the Reds training session at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday and is pushing for squad selection on Sunday albeit it’s a long shot at this stage.
Diawara played just 21 minutes off the bench in the round two draw with Newcastle Jets before succumbing to a miserable spate of injuries.
Olyroos George Blackwood also returned to Reds training after his international stint in Cambodia where Australia’s under-23s qualified for the AFC U-23 championship on January.
He could also be up for selection against the Mariners.
Ben Halloran was also training spritely after tearing his syndesmosis — the ligament which connects the base of the tibia and fibula — in February.
However Dane Ken Ilso was absent from the session he was provisionally suspended from all football activities for alleged doping last week.
