Adelaide United star James Troisi could be on the move during next month’s transfer window

Adelaide United coach Gertjan Verbeek revealing the club doesn’t have funds for any signings in January could all change if James Troisi exits the Reds in January.

Contracted Adelaide United star James Troisi is attracting more than a fleeting interest from clubs keen to land the South Australian Socceroos playmaker.

It’s understood Troisi’s affordable buyout clause has made the 31-year-old an interesting prospect for a return to China via mediators acting on the player’s behalf.

An A-League club is also lurking to sign Troisi in January.

The rival A-League club is understood to have asked Reds officials for permission to speak to the player.

The A-League club does have a number of options to lure the South Australian away from his home state as China’s transfer window closes on February 28.

If Troisi does exit the club in January before the A-League window closes it would free up some of the Reds salary cap and perhaps put Adelaide in a position to become active.

More than six months after football director Bruce Djite said “we’ll spend more money this season than Adelaide United ever has in its history”, Adelaide coach Gertjan Verbeek this week said bolstering stock is unlikely.

“No, there’s no money,’’ Verbeek said when asked on Boxing Day pre-game whether there would be a possibility of signing new players in January.

Troisi has scored once for the Reds – a crucial winner against Newcastle Jets – and created two assists in his eight Adelaide matches since making his United debut in round three.

Troisi spent six months in China with Liaoning FC in 2016 before returning to Melbourne Victory.

Signed by Adelaide in October, Troisi sparked interest from China before the nation’s football association this week imposed a salary cap on the amount a foreign player can be paid.

China’s new visa player salary is worth $3.75 million after tax which is expected to see Europe’s finest spurn contracts for the Chinese Super League after it became a hotbed for record signings.

Although existing contracts won’t be reportedly be affected, Argentina’s Carlos Tevez reportedly broke salary records in 2016 when Shanghai Shenhua signed him for about $84 million a year.

Brazil’s Oscar was paid $73 million a year after signing for Shanghai SIP.
