Adelaide United gun Craig Goodwin recovers from mystery virus

ADELAIDE United’s SA-born gun winger Craig Goodwin was worried his season was over when he was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment before the Reds’ FFA Cup semi-final victory.

A-League and W-League officially launched

ADELAIDE United’s SA-born gun winger Craig Goodwin was worried his season was over when he was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment before the Reds beat Bentleigh Greens 2-0 in the FFA Cup.

He watched the semi final from home after he was discharged two days earlier.

Now four days before Adelaide faces Sydney FC in the opening round of season 14 of the A-League on Friday at Hindmarsh Stadium, Goodwin believes he is steadily recovering from a virus which sapped his strength.

The 26-year-old was admitted to the Calvary Wakefield Private Hospital on October 1 for three days after medicos were concerned about his health at a Reds training session when he arrived with severe headaches and started vomiting.

Goodwin was placed on an intravenous drip while doctors performed numerous tests on the Red in an effort to discover what had floored the winger after his preseason had been outstanding.

“It was a bit of a hiccup, I got a headache which lasted four days and went into the club to get some treatment and then started throwing up and got the shakes,’’ Goodwin said at the A-League launch in Sydney on Monday.

“I was a little bit worried, it was weird, I didn’t know what was going on.

“I went into hospital for three days and I haven’t had anything like that before.

“Once I got into the hospital I got the Endone (painkiller) and the anti nausea stuff and ended up having a headache for about six or seven days.

“It wouldn’t got away but they did all the tests and ruled out anything really major and basically said it was a viral infection.”

Goodwin said the illness was by far the worst he had during a brilliant career which started when he played junior football for Munno Para City.

After having almost a week off Goodwin returned to training where Reds medical staff ensure their prized re-signing would recover from the mystery virus at a monitored pace.

He played for 45 minutes during Adelaide’s 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory in the last preseason friendly of the season at Hindmarsh on Friday and admits he felt flat after the clash.

“For the past week I have been getting my energy back and trying to get back to fitness and stuff,’’ Goodwin said.

“I have been easing it back into training.

“After the 45 minutes against Victory, I did feel a bit flat and underdone.

“I’m still working my way back to the energy levels, it took it out if me.

“I had some good form before that and coming into the season, it may take a couple of days to really get back into it but I’m going to be ready for the first game against Sydney FC this week, it’s been a long time coming.”
