Marco Kurz is hot property as lucrative deals flood in for the revered German.
After he gave Adelaide United every chance to extend his two-year contract it’s understood Kurz was courted by a plethora of clubs prior to meeting Adelaide chairman Piet van de Pol on Monday.
Remaining loyal to Adelaide, Kurz wanted to first discuss the potential of staying, keeping big money coaching offers at bay before van der Pol cut the German loose.
He will end his tenure at the end of the season.
It’s understood Kurz was prepared to look at signing a new United deal because he wanted to stay in Adelaide, sources claim.
However, it’s unclear if offers have come from any rival A-League clubs.
The German’s ability has never been questioned.
He won the FFA Cup with the Reds, took them to last season’s finals series and another FFA Cup final.
He looks set to win the Reds another shot at the championship with five home-and-away rounds remaining after leading Germany’s Kaiserslautern to the top tier Bundesliga in 2010.
Kurz now has a massive job on his hands in the remaining matches as Ken Ilso’s Reds future is in jeopardy.
The Dane was on Friday provisionally suspended by Football Federation Australia under its National Anti-Doping Policy.
The provisional suspension came after a positive A-sample test for Benzoylecgonine (metabolite of Cocaine), which is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Code and FFA’s National Anti-Doping Policy.
He was tested by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority on January 27 after the 2-1 win at home over Central Coast Mariners.
With Adelaide facing a rejuvenated Mariners under new boss, former Matildas chief Alen Stajcic away next Sunday, on loan striker Jordy Thomassen is also in doubt for the clash.
The Dutchman hurt his knee during a training session at Hindmarsh on Friday as defender Ryan Strain believes the Reds can halt the five game slump in Gosford.
Strain predicted the squad would overcome all hurdles including a shift of training venues between Adelaide City Park and Hindmarsh Stadium because the club’s Playford headquarters’ pitch is undergoing repairs.
“I’ve got a lot of faith in Marco, he believes in me and gave me my chance,’’ Strain said.
“I’ve played 20 games now this season and that shows he puts his trust in me and I want repay him and try to win another trophy with him.
“We’ve got to get back in the rhythm of things and now we’re focusing on Central Coast.”
Adelaide has earned just two points and scored twice since holding Melbourne City to a 1-1 draw away on February 9.
Strain, 21, made his debut under Kurz among the seven Reds debutants the German blooded since arriving in 2017.
They have played 57 matches and a total of 3364 minutes with Strain playing 37 of those matches — the best development result in the entire A-League.
Strain said Adelaide needed to create lots more chances in the hope of beating Mariners for the third time this season after a 3-0 win in Gosford before an uncomfortable 2-1 win at Hindmarsh.
“We’re not getting the luck we need at the moment,’’ he said.
