Everything you need to know about the 2025 Super Netball season as Team Girls Cup awarded to Adelaide

The pre-season Team Girls Cup is heading to Adelaide in a nod to South Australia’s standing in the sport after the Thunderbirds’ double premiership success.

Adelaide has underlined its position as a netball hotspot with the city to host the pre-season Team Girls Cup for the first time on March 14-16.

After the Thunderbirds claimed their second successive Super Netball title in a sold out grand final in the city last July, all eight Super Netball clubs will head to South Australia for the pre-season tournament.

The three-day carnival and associated pre-season meetings and content capture days will bring almost 200 players, officials and league staff into the South Australian capital in a tidy economic windfall for the city.

The Thunderbirds will headline the opening day’s play, taking on the Melbourne Mavericks as former T-Birds assistant coach Tracey Neville returns to Adelaide as the Mavs kick off their second season in the league and a bid for a maiden finals campaign.

West Coast Fever will play the Queensland Firebirds in the competition opener in a battle of Africa’s top shooters, the game pitting Malawi’s Mwai Kumwenda (Fever) against Uganda’s Mary Cholhok (Firebirds) after Kumwenda was named as a maternity leave replacement for legendary Fever goaler Jhaniele Fowler.

Firebirds fans will also get their first look at England import Imogen Allison in that match as well, while the Swifts’ New Zealand star Grace Nweke, arguably the highest-profile debutant in Super Netball this season, will play in the night’s third match against the Melbourne Vixens.

Eight games will be held over a morning and night session on March 15, ahead of the finals on March 16, with all games at Netball SA Stadium.

NA boss Stacey West said the league was thrilled to bring the Team Girls Cup to Adelaide for the first time.

“The tournament is a fantastic opportunity for fans to witness the high level of competition and excitement that Suncorp Super Netball offers,” West said.

“With the Thunderbirds returning as champions and last year’s winners, the NSW Swifts, looking to defend their Suncorp Team Girls Cup title, we are in for a truly exciting tournament.”

The Swifts and Vixens played last year’s final, with the Swifts winning what superstitious minds regard as a “cursed” trophy given no Team Girls Cup winner has gone on to claim the season’s main prize.

Tickets for the tournament go on sale on February 5 for club members and those registered, with the general public able to access the sale on February 6.

Team Girls Cup matches will be broadcast on Kayo Sports and Foxtel, and for the first time, on Binge.
