WBBL 2023: Alyssa Healy freak injury cause revealed, potential recovery timeline

Injured Sydney Sixer Alyssa Healy has opened up on the ‘crime scene’ that confronted her after she broke up a fight between her two pet dogs – that resulted in a freak injury to the superstar.

Alyssa Healy admitted her house looked like a ‘crime scene’ on Saturday night after an energetic play fight with her dogs went wrong.

Healy and her husband Mitch Starc’s two Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Misty and Millie, were playing with each other when the Australian wicketkeeper found herself in the middle of it.

Her right index finger ended up getting caught by one of the dogs and she rushed straight to the emergency room before having surgery on Sunday morning.

“I’ve got two puppy dogs that were having a bit of rough and tumble,” Healy said.

“It got a little bit more than that and unfortunately I got my hand in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“My right index finger took a bit of a battering.

“I think the positive sign out of it is there was no bone or tendon damage or a rupture. I think there was an artery involved which probably made it look like more of a crime scene than it needed to be.”

Healy said that in the immediate aftermath of the incident, she was concerned about her long-term playing future.

While there is no confirmed time frame for her return to cricket, all signs point to the fact that the surgery went well.

“When I pulled my finger out initially, I thought I was in strife,” Healy said.

“I’d say it’s shorter-term more than long-term at the moment the way people are talking. It’s all going to come down to function and whether I can continue to grip the bat the way I need to or catch the ball.

“The positive side is the surgery all went well. I’ve got a few appointments this week to figure out the prognosis, I’ll hopefully know more by the end of the week.

“Hopefully, I can knuckle down in my rehab and get it right for the Sixers this year or whatever it might look like.”

The injury is on the opposite hand of the finger issue she has been playing through at the start of the season. Healy said she joked with the surgeon whether he could fix both at the same time.

While the 33-year-old is holding out hope of returning for the Sixers this year, she knows that there is a good chance her WBBL season is over. The club is awaiting more details on her injury later this week before announcing a replacement.

“I’m really optimistic about it,” Healy said.

“I’ll take the opportunity to have a rest while I can. It’s not ideal, I was looking forward to the WBBL and contributing significantly for the Sixers.

“I’ve been given a break now to support them and get myself right, whether it’s for the back end of the season or a big summer ahead.”

Healy is hopeful she will recover in time for Australia’s multi-format tour of India at the end of the year, with the team set to depart in mid-December.

She also confirmed that things have been patched up with Misty and Millie.

“The good news is we’re still friends,” Healy said.

“They’re probably worse for wear than I was. We all sat on the couch together last night and debriefed the situation so we’re all getting along fine.”
