WBBL: Spin star equals tournament’s best-ever figures in five-wicket spree

One player now holds the two best-ever bowling figures in the WBBL after a stunning five-wicket spree in Adelaide.

SHOCKING - Dreadful Dutch start 0-2

Last summer Amanda-Jade Wellington was considered one of the most hard done by players in Australian cricket when she couldn’t break in to the Australian team despite being as the leading wicket-taker in the WBBL.

Eventually she was called in to the 50-over World Cup squad and showed why on Monday taking three wickets in four balls as part of a stunning five-wicket haul for the Strikers in Adelaide to equal the best WBBL figures of all-time.

Almost single-handedly demolishing the Melbourne Renegades, Wellington snaffled amazing figures of 5-8, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick and equalling the previous best bowling figures in the tournament, which were also hers.

The 25-year-old, who played two World Cup games in New Zealand in March, had figures of 2-6 before being thrown the ball for the last over of a lacklustre Renegades innings.

She took wickets with the second, third and fifth balls to limit the visitors to just 101, the second-lowest total in any full match so far this season. Wellington’s haul also included a brilliant, diving caught and bowled effort which helped propel the Strikers to just their second win of the season.

Wellington’s haul also took her to equal top of the WBBL this season, with eight wickets from four games.

The Adelaide batters wasted no time chasing down the paltry total in the 18th over, thanks to an unbeaten 55 off 55 balls from West Indian import Deandra Dottin.

The Renegades have managed just one win from their four games and sit second last on the table.
