WBBL: Injury to Brisbane Heat’s Georgia Redmayne hits new ladder leaders

Scans on Thursday could determine the immediate WBBL future of the competition’s leading run-scorer.

A hamstring injury to the WBBL‘s leading run-scorer and keeper Georgia Redmayne soured a massive Brisbane Heat win in Perth which lifted them to the top of the table with just over a week left before finals.

Redmayne, who has powered her way to a competition-high 333 runs, which is 66 more than the next best batter, was forced to retire hurt on 28 not out while batting against the Scorchers in Perth on Wednesday.

Her innings helped propel the Heat to 7-153 before the Brisbane bowlers went to work limiting the home team to 8-120 to record a 33-run win with Nicola Hancock taking three wickets after Ellie Johnston took Redmayne’s place behind the stumps.

The victory also propelled the Heat to the top of the WBBL table, for now, but their push towards the finals might have to be made without their star batter who will have scans when the team travels to Adelaide on Thursday.

Brisbane has to play two matches in three days in Adelaide with matches on Saturday and Monday, before two more to close out the regular season next Wednesday and then Sunday before the finalists are decided.

A significant injury would rule Redmayne out for the remained of the regular season, but she could return in time for the finals, should Brisbane make them, which start on November 23, with the final to be played on November 26.

But Brisbane will also be without Indian international, Pooja Vastrakar has been called home for international duties.

The victory over the Scorchers was Brisbane’s seventh from 10 games, and lifted them above the Sydney Sixers, who play the Renegades on Thursday in Melbourne.
