AN OPENING stand of 176 between Ben Wakim (114no) and James McCollum (72) helped Adelaide University account for reigning premier Tea Tree Gully at Pertaringa Oval in their Premier Cricket one-day clash on Saturday.

Batting first Tea Tree Gully struggled to 7/216 with Patrick Page Junior leading the way 78, while Adam Somerfield backed up with 40.

Any chance of striking early in Uni’s innings was doused by the strong showing by the Uni pair with Wakim chalking up 13 fours and McCollum adding seven fours. Bailey Wightman added to the Uni result with 4/26.

Uni coach Ben Hilliard said it was an impressive effort from his team.

“To perform well in all facets of the game against a really strong outfit was really pleasing,” Hilliard said.

“Young Bailey, who is just 19, did really well and probably had his best game in his short career while Ben (Wakim) and James (McCollum) also batted really well.’’

A strong effort from Glenelg with bat and ball saw it account for East Torrens at Glenelg.

Batting first the Eastern Reds were dismissed for 187 in 46.3 overs with opener Ben Dougall topscoring with 59. In reply the Seahorses cruised to 3/190 in 37.1 overs with an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 101 between Danny Irvine (82no) and Josh Hoffmann (54no) proving the key. Daniel Clarke led the bowling for the Seahorses with 4/41 from 8.3 overs with each of the six Glenelg bowlers used taking wickets.

Kensington’s 8/261 proved too much for Port Adelaide (8/236) at Parkinson Oval. Captain Jake Brown continued his outstanding form for the unbeaten Browns with 84, while Alex Ross, at number four, made 60. The Magpies looked a chance when Ben Cooper (50) and Aaron Sayers put on 98 for the opening wicket. But the loss of those wickets and Nick Benton (48) put Port under pressure later in its innings. Nick Palmer took 4/37 for the Browns.

Adelaide had no worries chasing Southern District’s 158 at Bice Oval to finish on 5/159 in 43.3 overs. James Takos topscored for the Buffalos with 58no, while Phillip Neate enjoyed a top game with 33 and 4/29. Aiden Zammit played a lone hand for the Stingrays with 78.

West Torrens pair Martin Sandersson (99 run out) and Kelvin Smith (106) took charge for a second-wicket stand of 190 to guide their side to 3/263 in 47.1 overs and a home victory pursuit against Prospect. The Pirates, on the back of a third-wicket stand of 114 between Sam Miller (78) and Ben Turley (54), finished with 5/259 but were under pressure to stem the flow of the Eagles’ combo.

Sturt produced the highest score of the day with 7/306 in its victory against Northern Districts (166) at Salisbury Oval. Batting first openers Josh Dick and Connor Dudley piled on 175 for the first wicket with 94 each for the Blues, while Brinder Phagura kept the pressure up for the Blues with the ball with 5/26. Mitch Thomas was the standout for the Jets with 63 from 64 balls.

There are more one-day matches on Sunday with Kensington hosting East Torrens, Tea Tree Gully home to Prospect, Southern Districts playing West Torrens at Bice Oval, Glenelg against Adelaide at Glenelg, Northern Districts meeting Adelaide University at Salisbury Oval and Woodville taking on Sturt at Woodville Oval.
