The Ashes 2017: Ryan Harris says Jake Lehmann putting compelling case forward for Aussie inclusion

ASHES great Ryan Harris would be amused and excited by a father-son combo of Darren Lehmann and boom left-hander Jake Lehmann in the Australian set up.

'My role is as a leader'

ASHES great Ryan Harris would be amused and excited by a father-son combo of Darren Lehmann and boom left-hander Jake Lehmann in the Australian set up.

South Australia batsman Lehmann, 25, is making an audacious push for the No.6 Test slot after blasting 103 and 93 against a quality Victorian attack in Melbourne.

Lehmann has joined a plethora of candidates including all-rounder Hilton Cartwright, incumbent Test No.6 Glenn Maxwell, Callum Ferguson, Travis Head and Shaun Marsh in contention for an Ashes berth.

Callum Ferguson reminded selectors of his ability with an undefeated, second innings 182 against Victoria in a 212-run stand with Lehmann. Usman Khawaja, Lehmann, Marcus Harris, Steve Smith and Ferguson made tons over the first two Shield rounds.

Harris says more runs against Western Australia in the third Sheffield Shield round in Perth would catapult Lehmann, with a first-class average of 42, to the front of the queue for Test selection.

“If he is there he deserves it. He made 90 in the second innings of that Shield game and if he makes another one, scores a hundred if not two, he has to be talked about,” said Harris.

“We have seen some good scores from players and I am sure that Darren would like to have seen some more.”

Harris was captained by Darren Lehmann with South Australia before joining Queensland.

He would also be coached by Lehmann while taking 113 Test scalps at 23.5 including 57 at 22 against England.

“I think it would be quite funny to have two Lehmann’s in the one place at the one time. If he (Jake) is there he has deserved it,” said Harris.

“I think someone said if Jake got into the Australian team Darren would quit, but we don’t want to lose another coach before and Ashes.”

Jake Lehmann said he wasn’t concerned about making life difficult for the old man but expected to bide his time before a shot at Test selection.

“It’s obviously your dream to wear the baggy green, that’s what you play state cricket for, but it’s not like I think it will be on my straight away list,” said Lehmann.

“I am concentrating on winning games for South Australia.”
