Test pair Shaun and Mitch Marsh take hit as Daniel Worrall ravages Western Australia in Adelaide

Ashes smoky Daniel Worrall of the Redbacks ravaged Western Australia taking 7/64 before another SA batting collapse in the Sheffield Shield clash at Adelaide Oval.

South Australian swingman Daniel Worrall says cannoning into Ashes calculations with a career-best comeback against Western Australia will be hollow without a drought-breaking victory in Adelaide.

Worrall emerged from five months mothballed by foot and back injuries to take 7/64 in Western Australia’s first innings total of 207 on Saturday.
Worrall’s supreme efforts were undone as the Redbacks suffered a 5/94 collapse by stumps on day two.

“I am just glad to be out there, it is all happening a bit fast. I just want to win the game, it kind of doesn’t mean to much if we don’t,” said former Australian one-day paceman Worrall with winless SA holding a tenuous 138-run lead.

“I am pretty proud of what happened, a lot of hard work has gone into it. Sometimes it just clicks. Hopefully it comes out the same next innings.

“There wasn’t a lot the pitch was offering but lucky the ball kept swinging, got wickets by perseverance. In the second innings I will be ready to go again, we need early wickets.”

Worrall’s initial County stint with Gloucestershire was cut short by a foot stress fracture in May but not before the 27-year-old learnt tricks that could put him in the Ashes frame.

Worrall, who took 16 wickets in four County championship games, uses his stock outswinger with great effect but a faster, straight ball developed in his Nevil Road stay fooled Josh Inglis (2) into shouldering arms.

“Playing with the Dukes ball it’s not the ball that swings in but the one that goes straight is a good weapon to have,” said Worrall, who will return to Gloucester in 2019.

“It is something I picked up and tried it with the Kooka and it worked.”

Worrall tore through the Warriors including current and former Test allrounders Mitch Marsh (1) and Hilton Cartwright (42). Shaun Marsh (21) and skipper Mitch Marsh were upstaged by a 64-run, ninth-wicket stand between Jhye Richardson (53) and unbeaten Matt Kelly (25).

Warriors seamer Kelly (3/27) hit back late claiming star trio Callum Ferguson (11), Travis Head (6) and Jake Lehmann (0) flashing outside off stump. Opener Conor McInerney (41) fell to a brilliant diving catch at gully by Josh Philippe off Richardson (1/18).
