A ONE-DAY World Cup in June has put the spotlight on short-form performances for the Southern Stars in six games over the next two weeks.

While the national men’s Twenty20 team fight for relevance in the shadow of an impending Test series against India, Stars skipper Meg Lanning knows plenty is riding on the games against New Zealand starting on Friday.

Lanning will lead her team against the Kiwis in three T20s then three one-day games between now and March 5 with plenty of starting spots up for grabs.

The second edition of the WBBL produced a new line of national players with uncapped trio Ashleigh Gardner, Molly Strano and Sarah Aley all likely to see game time this Friday at the MCG.

Lanning said she had watched the BBL with interest looking for players who could “impact” games with planning in place to defend their World Cup crown in England later this year.

“I watch a lot of cricket and I did watch a lot of the games, you keep an eye out for players who can add something to the squad and the team,” Lanning said.

“We’ve got a World Cup coming up so we are looking for players who can come in and impact.

“It’s great that we have so many new players in the squad, younger players who have great energy and bring something different to the squad. I think we are in a really good place.”

The Southern Stars will be without gun all-rounder Ellyse Perry who is recovering from a hamstring injury but she is expected to recover for the one-day games in New Zealand.
