ADELAIDE Strikers captain Travis Head has been snubbed in the annual Indian Premier League auction held over the weekend.
However, day two of the auction was kind to Australian quicks, with Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff picking up sizeable contracts with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.
Head’s teammate Billy Stanlake ($97,000) was signed by David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad where he will join fellow Striker and spin king Rashid Khan, who earnt a huge payday of $1.7 million.
It was a dream day for Andrew Tye, who moments after claiming his maiden ODI five-for picked up a $1.4 million deal in the IPL.
Tye, who had a reserve price of INR one crore, was at the middle of a three-way bidding war between the Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders that was eventually won by Punjab. A
ll-rounders Dan Christian ($291,000) and Ben Cutting ($426,800) picked up contracts with the Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians.
However, not every Australian quick was so fortunate, with Jhye Richardson, Joel Paris and Ben Laughlin all unsold yesterday. All unsold players can be bid on later in the auction at the request of IPL franchises.
Eight Australians were sold on day one, with Chris Lynn the biggest earner. The Brisbane Heat star picked up a $1.86m bid from the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Lynn was the fifth biggest contract, behind Stokes ($2.4m) and Jaydev Unadkat ($2.23m) and will link up with compatriot Mitchell Starc in Kolkata, who was signed for $1.8m.
The biggest surprise was 16-year-old Afghanistan off-spinner Mujeeb Zadran bought for $776,000 by Kings XI Punjab. Zadran took 4-14 for Afghanistan in the quarter-finals of under-19 World Cup against New Zealand.
