The Tasmanian Tigers playing group for next season with an Australian Test spinner headlining the club’s latest double signing.

Matthew Kuhnemann and Will Prestwidge have been unveiled as the Tigers newest players after both were let go by Queensland at the end of the last domestic cricket season.

Left-arm spinner Kuhnemann rose to prominence when he played three Test matches for Australia in the tour of India last year where he took a five-wicket haul in his second test.

“I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity from Tasmania to join their talented squad,” he said.

“I’m excited to get down there, challenge myself, and help contribute to winning games and competitions for Tasmania.”

Throughout his career, the 27-year-old has also been a strong performer in the BBL for the Brisbane Heat taking 37 wickets at an average of 27.59.

Cricket Tasmania’s general manager of high performance Salliann Beams said Kuhnemann was an exciting addition.

“We are excited to have a player of Matt’s calibre join the Tigers, and believe he will play a key role us in the white-ball format of the game,” she said.

“Matt’s left-arm orthodox bowling craft will provide us with a different option to our bowling line-up, as someone who has had success for Australia, and on a national stage in the BBL.”

Prestwidge, 22, said the local conditions could play a big role in his development.

“I am excited to be continuing my development as a cricketer in Tasmania,” he said.

“I’ve been told that the conditions have been suitable for pace bowling, so I am looking forward to taking wickets for the Tigers.”

Beams said she was confident the Tigers could develop Prestwidge’s “raw pace”.

The pair will link up with their new teammates when pre-season starts in June.
