It’s official: Daily Telegraph’s Phil Hillyard took the best cricket photo of 2018

A moment in time perfectly captured, held for posterity with the same breathtaking skill as displayed by the man at the heart of the image itself.

This incredible picture of Sydney Sixers’ Moises Henriques taking flight to pick the ball out of the air to dismiss Melbourne Stars’ Nick Larkin was taken by Daily Telegraph photographer Phil Hillyard.

It made the front page of the paper, and now has been recognised as the best in its field by one of the leading voices in the international game.

Hillyard’s image won the Wisden-MCC Cricket Photograph of the year for 2018, topping a shortlist of the best work from cricket grounds around the world.

“It’s such an honour to win the Wisden — MCC Photo of the Year for a sport I am so passionate about and have spent much of my career covering,” said Hillyard.

“I love the game of cricket, its people and the challenge of photographing it. I feel very privileged that my image will be on display at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket.

“A big thank you from me goes to Moises Henriques for taking such a great catch at the wonderful Sydney Cricket Ground.”

Virat Kohli may have walked away with the top playing honour for the third time in a row, but Australia can boast one victory now at least.
