Candice and Dave Warner will have their third child in England during the Cricket World Cup

Cricketers have regularly and reluctantly been absent from the birth of their children. But rarely has a family gone to the same lengths as the Warners during next month’s World Cup.

Cricketers have regularly and reluctantly been absent from the birth of their children. Allan Border was batting to save the Sydney Test in 1986 and notified of the arrival of his first child by the old electronic scoreboard.

In more recent times, players have been more likely to leave a tour than miss the special occasion, but rarely has a family gone to the same lengths as the Warners during next month’s World Cup.

David Warner’s heavily pregnant wife, Candice, will fly to London and have the baby there in order not to upset the Australians’ campaign.

The mother of two young girls is understood to have told her husband that she was determined the birth of their third child would not interrupt the most important ODI tournament on the international calendar.

Warner’s young family will leave Australia in early June because Candice would not be able to fly after that date. The birth will be induced after the Australians play New Zealand. The side has a seven-day break before the next match against South Africa in Manchester.

Warner, who is battling a virus, is back in the Australian fold with former captain Steve Smith after a one-year ban following the ball tampering incident in South Africa.

The lead-up to the incident was wrought with controversy when Candice was the subject of attacks by South African players, officials and crowds.

The couple suffered the trauma of a miscarriage soon after the South African tour.

“The ordeal from the public humiliations to the ball tampering had taken its toll and, from that moment, we decided nothing will impact our lives like that again,” Candice told News Corp in January.

Warner travels with his family as often as possible, claiming their presence eases his mind during long trips away. The players’ wives and girlfriends are permitted to join them during an approved period in coming weeks.

“He’s a fantastic cricketer but I always say he’s an even better father,” Candice said. “He is so hands-on and the girls just love him.”

There are concerns that the Barmy Army could again attack Candice as it did in Australia during the 2017-18 Ashes.

England spinner Moeen Ali defended Warner and Smith in an interview with the The Guardian newspaper and called on local fans to treat them with respect.

“I really hope they don’t get too much stick,” Moeen said. “I want them to enjoy the series. If you have to, keep it funny, not personal.”

Warner has been in great form despite his 12-month ban. He was the highest scorer in the Indian Premier League despite leaving the tournament early to join the Australian World Cup squad in Brisbane to prepare for the tournament which begins on May 30.
