Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has criticised the home crowd for booing visiting skipper Virat Kohli upon entrance on the Adelaide Oval on day three of the first Test.

Kohli was booed as he made his way out to the middle with the Test in the balance at 2-76.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Ponting said that the jeering was an ugly look.

“I don’t like seeing it at all,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.

“It didn’t worry me as a player when it happened in England a couple times. You’ve almost got to accept it as acknowledgment for what you’ve done in the game. But I’d rather not see that happen at all.”

However, the Test great said that Kohli would likely have used the jeering to his advantage.

“It’ll be water off a duck’s back (for Kohli), I’m sure,” Ponting added.

“He’s probably had worse things happen to him on a cricket field, I would have thought, than getting booed by a couple of spectators as he walks on.

“If anything, it might have steeled him a little bit more.

“He (was) hardly playing a shot (early in his innings) and he looked like he wanted to really ground the Aussies into the deck.”

MATCH CENTRE: Australia v India Day 3

Indeed, Kohli, together with first-innings centurion Cheteshwar Pujara, combined to put India firmly in the box seat on day three.

After batsmen from both sides were guilty of gifting their wickets away during the first two and a half days, the duo combined for the biggest partnership of the match (71) before Kohli fell for 34, as he attempted to defend Nathan Lyon but managed to inside edge the delivery to Aaron Finch at short-leg.

Kohli’s 34, which followed his single digit score (3) in the first innings, meant the Indian captain failed to leave Adelaide with a century, after scoring three tons from his previous two Tests at the ground.

But in a Test where runs have been hard to come by, his partnership has helped pilot India into a matchwinning position.
