With only T20 on his mind in the wake of his ODI retirement, Glenn Maxwell was happy he could finally deliver for his coach Ricky Ponting proving himself the money man in an MLC rampage, swatting a staggering 13 sixes in California to blast a sizzling 49-ball century with his parents in the stands.
It marked a significant return for the 36-year-old who had a shocking IPL, scoring just 48 runs in his six innings for the Punjab Kings, where Ponting was the coach, which ended with a broken finger but could cast doubt on his capacity to earn another big-money deal in India.
But after powering the Freedom to a win last weekend with an unbeaten 38, Maxwell exploded at the Oakland baseball stadium, an arena that has provided a launching pad for a barrage of sixes.
Coming in at No.6, the Freedom captain only scored 11 runs in his first 15 balls as he tried to set a target for the Los Angeles Knight Riders.
But then came a typical Maxwell explosion and he blasted another 95 in his next 34 balls, clearing the fences 13 times, the most in his career, and finishing unbeaten on 106, his team’s 8-205 more than enough as LA was rolled for 95, delivering a win for Ponting.

“Pretty cool, but they don’t get to see me make many runs very often, so it’s nice to have them here and witness something like this,” Maxwell said after his innings, referring to his mum and dad being in Oakland to watch him go off.
“And it’ll take an innings like this, where I can start to sort of get a bit of a roll. Even like the other night, I felt like just a bit of time out in the middle was all I needed to feel that confidence coming back. I’ve probably let him (Ponting) down in a few of the tournaments that we’ve played together.
“I think in this tournament, to be captain and play under him, I feel like we’ve got a great opportunity to hopefully add to last year’s trophy.”
It was an eighth T20 hundred for Maxwell, one of only three Australians to have a Test, ODI and T20 international century.
Maxwell’s five international T20 hundreds is the equal most by any player in history, and he remains available to play for Australia in the shortest format.
His innings in California proved more than enough as the Knight Riders were all out for just 95, chasing 5-208.
