Superstar all-rounder Ellyse Perry has re-injured the hamstring she had surgery on earlier this year and won’t play any of the remaining four games against New Zealand.

Perry, who suffered the serious injury during the T20 World Cup and missed Australia’s victory in the final, had been training with the Australian squad in Brisbane and was hoping to play in the one-day series.

But Australian captain Meg Lanning confirmed Perry, 29, had suffered a “setback” during a running session and her return to cricket, including the WBBL which starts next month, remains unknown.

“Ellyse was on track to play some part in this series but unfortunately had some hamstring awareness and has got a low grade strain. She won’t be available for the rest of the series,” Lanning said on Tuesday

“She’ll remain with the team to continue with her rehab in the hope of being available at some point during the WBBL.

“I think she’s doing everything she can to be available as soon as possible. It’s a very complex injury and hard to get the timing on when certain things will happen.

“It’s really important to take the time and get her right before we put her out on the field. Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later.”

Lanning said Perry felt the “awareness” while tracking through her rehab process, which began while she was in lockdown in Melbourne, and had progressed to the point where she was on the verge of playing.

“It was just during a running session she was doing at training,” Lanning said.

“She was progressing through her plan to make herself available. It’s unfortunate that it happened but it’s on the minor end, and she’s doing everything she can to make herself available.”

The Aussies have already won the T20 series against New Zealand after victories on Saturday and Sunday, with one game to go on Wednesday.

The teams will then face off in three one-day matches in Brisbane.

The WBBL schedule was confirmed last week, with matches starting on October 25.

Perry would be unlikely to feature in at least the early stages of the competition.
