Ellyse Perry wants to play every game in the upcoming WBBL season for the Sydney Sixers, from game one, and won’t stop playing as an all-rounder.
There were fears Perry could be in doubt for at least the October 25 WBBL opener after missing all six matches against New Zealand earlier this month following a setback in her return from hamstring surgery.
Perry went under the knife in March after tearing her hamstring off the bone during Australia’s final pool match of the T20 World Cup.
The 29-year-old then suffered hamstring “awareness” after a training session with the Aussie team in Brisbane and was withdrawn from the series against the Kiwis.
But the superstar all-rounder said that was part of a “conservative” approach, and she should be ready to go when the WBBL season starts.
“We ended up taking a conservative approach so I’d be good to go for the start of the WBBL, and it’s looking that way,” Perry said on Monday.
“We’ve got another 10 or so days before our game and it’s nice to have a bit of preparation in Sydney, and it should be all good.
“It was good to go up and train with the group in Brisbane and be part of cricket again. I’m really looking forward to playing again. I’ve been training fully for nearly a month.
“I’ve been keen to make sure when I do play it’s not at a lower capacity than I’m used to.
“It’s been a good challenge in a lot of ways, and I have probably learned quite a bit from it. It’s nice to be on the other side of it now.”
Despite national coach Matthew Mott flagging the potential for her to maybe bowl less at the back end of her career to look after her body, Perry said that wasn’t part of her thinking.
“It’s easy to talk about those things when you are not playing and you have a little challenge with an injury,“ Perry said.
“From my perspective I still have a lot to give. And cricket is a low-impact sport. I’m not quite 30 yet, so I still feel like I have a lot to give.
“I don’t think I’d offer anywhere near as much as a player, just being a batter. I don’t think I’d enjoy it either to be honest.
“It’s not really ever been in my mindset to do that, and I don’t think it ever really will be.”
The entire WBBL season will be played out of “villages” in Sydney, and despite the prospect of back-to-back games across weekends, Perry hopes to play every game.
“The Sydney hub poses a lot of challenges, staying fresh, not getting caught in the monotony of being in the same place for an extended period of time will be tough,” she said.
“I’ll certainly be aiming to play every game.”
