STAR Redbacks bowler Chadd Sayers has succumbed to a long-term knee injury and will miss this week’s home Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia, starting on Friday.
Sayers, who made his long-awaited Australian Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in March, had his right knee “cleaned up’’ after playing his one and only Test against the Proteas.
He has played all three Shield matches for SA this season, taking 11 wickets, but has had a recurrence of the soreness — “it caused me a little bit of grief,’’ he said — that plagued him last season.
The 31-year-old has been sent for further medical tests with a return date unclear.
Swing king Sayers, who has taken 259 first-class scalps, has been replaced in the Redbacks’ 12-man squad by fast bowler Daniel Worrall, who has recovered from a back injury.
Captain Travis Head is back from international duty and replaces dropped all-rounder Cam Valente from the side that drew with Victoria at the MCG last week.
Alex Carey and Adam Zampa are unavailable due to their commitments with the Australian Twenty20 squad.
The Redbacks sit fourth on the Shield table after three consecutive draws against New South Wales, Queensland and the Vics. WA is second.
SA squad: Travis Head (c), Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson, Jake Lehmann, Conor McInerney, Joe Mennie, Harry Nielsen, Lloyd Pope, Kane Richardson, Jake Weatherald, Nick Winter, Daniel Worrall.
