Adelaide Strikers spin sensation Rashid Khan has slammed the fiery Perth Stadium pitch, saying it is unsuitable for Twenty20 cricket.

“You can’t expect that kind of wicket in the T20 format,’’ Rashid said after the reigning BBL champions were rolled for just 88 — the sixth lowest score in BBL history — against the Perth Scorchers on Wednesday night before losing by seven wickets.

“It was one of the toughest wickets I have seen, especially in the T20 format, and was difficult to bat on.

“It was very bouncy and we’ve never seen such a wicket in the T20 format before.

“But the stadium is new and not too many games have been played there.

“We should have exchanged the wicket with the Test match one in Melbourne but we can say bad luck for us because we didn’t execute as well as we could have and we’ll learn from that.’’

The Strikers lost the toss and were sent into bat on a pitch used for the first time in the Big Bash this season.

After a slow but steady start they lost 7/21, slumping from 0/25 to 7/46, as Scorchers quicks Jhye Richardson (3/7), Jason Behrendorff (2/16), Andrew Tye (2/9), Nathan Coulter-Nile (1/33) and David Willey (1/21) ran riot on a juicy wicket offering pace and bounce.

Rashid said in hindsight the Strikers should have settled for a score of 125 to 130, which he says would have given them a winning chance on the lively wicket, rather than chase 160 to 170 which is usually their target when batting first.

“When we started our innings on that wicket we didn’t quite know what a good total would be and when we lost quick wickets it made it difficult,’’ he said.

Adelaide was bowled out in just 17.2 overs with opener Jake Weatherald top scoring with 22 and seven batsmen failing to get past two.

The Strikers just beat their lowest score of 87 against the Sydney Sixers in 2011-12.

The Scorchers also struggled to score in the tough conditions but with no run rate pressure they reached their target for the loss of three wickets in 18 overs.

The defeat was Adelaide’s second in a row following their five-wicket loss to the Melbourne Renegades at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

It beat Brisbane Heat at the Gabba in round one.

Jason Gillespie’s side had not lost consecutive matches since falling to the Melbourne Stars and Renegades at the back end of BBL06 two years ago.

Rashid, the best spin bowler in the competition, was again outstanding against Perth, making 21 off 12 balls, including a remarkable six with a tennis smash type shot over backward square leg — “I just tried my best to hit the ball,’’ he said — and conceding just nine runs off his four overs.

The 20-year-old right-arm wrist spinner from Afghanistan has now taken 5/41 from 12 overs in BBL08 at a miserly economy rate of 3.4.

Rashid is confident the Strikers can put the back-to-back losses behind them and bounce back to winning ways in the New Year’s Eve clash against the Sydney Thunder at Adelaide Oval.

“We have confidence in our squad and we’ll come back stronger,’’ he said.
