Twenty20 cricket was never designed to be about dot balls.

Yet, in SuperCoach BBL, they can make a telling difference.

Bowlers accumulate one point for every dot ball and are subsequently all but guaranteed to score regardless of whether they take a wicket.

Wickets are the quickest source of points in SuperCoach BBL, with bowlers awarded 25 for every scalp.

Yet economy bonus is where many of the top scorers set themselves apart.

To be eligible for the extra points, bowlers must deliver at least two overs and concede less than eight runs an over.

Bowlers who concede less than four runs an over receive the maximum 25-point bonus.

There are also 20-point (4.01-5 runs an over), 15-point (5.01-6), 10-point (6.01-7) and five-point (7.01-8) bonuses available.

In BBL08, 12 of the 15 bowlers with the lowest economy rates were spinners, headed by Brisbane Heat’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

The stingy Ur Rahman conceded an average of only 6.04 runs an over, the equivalent of 10 extra SuperCoach BBL points in every game.

Injured Perth Scorchers quick Jason Behrendorff (6.24), former Test quick Jackson Bird (6.7) and Englishman Harry Gurney (7.17) were the only seamers in the top-15 of those who bowled more than 20 overs.

The prevalence of spinners highlights their importance in T20 cricket and further emphasises their value in SuperCoach BBL.
