Round 9 heralded the start of the Marcus Stoinis Show in this summer’s Big Bash League.

Returning from one-day international duties, the Melbourne Stars all-rounder took the new ball and opened the batting – the ultimate SuperCoach combination.

Stoinis has arguably the highest ceiling of any BBL player.

He scored 115 against Sydney Thunder in Round 5 and has cranked out monster totals of 194 and 199 against Melbourne Renegades.

He was available for $198,900 in Round 9 and those who jumped on early before Melbourne Stars’ Round 10 double were rewarded handsomely when he took 3-19 from four overs and made 70 not out from 65 balls.

As those who have Stoinis in their sides sat back and revelled in his dominance, those who had planned on trading him in ahead of Round 10 were left scrambling to come up with an appropriate trade.

The expectation is Stoinis’ price will be between $255,000-$265,000, a hefty price tag for even the best players in the BBL.

If you missed out on his score in Round 9, don’t make the same mistake again, regardless of what it means for your overall team structure.

One scenario which could allow you to get Stoinis is trading D’Arcy Short for one round and then bringing him back for his Round 11 double.

Another is punting any Melbourne Renegades you have left in your team as they no longer have another double game round and will encounter a bye in the last round of the BBL.

The likes of Kane Richardson, Mohammad Nabi and Aaron Finch could be moved on in an effort to bring Stoinis in.

The Stars share their double next round with Perth Scorchers, with the likes of Shaun Marsh, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff, if fit, set to be popular picks.

Just ensure that however you use your remaining two trades, you have one reserved for Stoinis.

TOP TARGETS

Marcus Stoinis

For all the reasons listed above, Stoinis is a must-have in Round 10. SuperCoaches often talk about the importance of not throwing out their team structure to acquire one player. Stoinis is the exception to the rule. Regardless of how you do it, you need him in your side this round. If you already have him, bank those 199 points from Round 9 and watch other coaches scramble to trade the Aussie all-rounder in.

Dwayne Bravo

Bravo is starting to show signs of form with the bat, scoring 33, 19 and 17 not out in his last three innings for the Stars. He’s only taken one wicket in his last three games, but his scoring potential is unquestionable. He bowls in the late overs of the innings each game, when most wickets are taken. He could be available for $100,000 less than Stoinis if you’re game enough not to pick the No.1 option for Round 10.

Nathan Coulter-Nile

Left out of the Australian one-day squad to face India, Coulter-Nile has responded with two scores of 109 in his past four matches for the Scorchers. Injury concerns over Jason Behrendorff, who withdrew from the last one-dayer as he managed a sore back, only served to increase the importance of Coulter-Nile to the Perth line-up. The Scorchers have two games at home in Round 10, where Coulter-Nile has taken five wickets in four BBL games this tournament.

Shaun Marsh

Fresh from scoring the most runs of any player in the Australia-India one-day series, Marsh will return to the Scorchers line-up primed to lead their push for a late charge toward BBL finals. The decision to leave the left-hander out of the Australia v Sri Lanka Test series presents a huge bonus for SuperCoaches, with Marsh available for only $103,900. That’s a bargain for a player who averages 49.5 with a strike rate of 128 in the BBL and is almost guaranteed to bat top three.

Andrew Tye

Tye made an indifferent start to BBL08 but has rediscovered his wicket-taking qualities in recent matches. After snaring four wickets in six games to start the tournament he has taken eight scalps in three games leading into his double game week. His price has jumped to $193,800 as a result, but he’s still worth considering after scores of 99, 65 and 139 in his most recent matches.

POD (POINT OF DIFFERENCE) MOVES

Nic Maddinson

Maddinson is the forgotten man in a top five featuring Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Handscomb and Ben Dunk. Coming in at No.5 limits his scoring potential somewhat, but the former Test batsman is the bargain pick of the Stars batting line-up. Since returning from injury, the 27-year-old has scores of 2, 5, 6 and 19. That hardly screams ‘pick me’, but a player of his talent will break a game open soon. It’s only a matter of time.

Alex Carey

Adelaide Strikers share a double with Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat in Round 11 and those without Matthew Wade will be eyeing the Australian one-day keeper. Carey will open the batting twice alongside Jake Weatherald next round. You’ll only have three trades to stock up for the game week where three sides play twice, so it is worth considering players from either the Strikers, Hurricanes or Heat for one of your Round 10 trades.

Adam Zampa

The leg-spinner is a regular wicket-taker when he features for the Stars and needs to be considered due to the price difference between him and other options such as Tye and Coulter-Nile. You’ll need cash up your sleeve to pick Stoinis and opting for Zampa instead of one of the Scorchers pacemen might allow you to add the prized all-rounder to your side. Zampa snared 2-29 on his return to the Stars line-up in the Round 9 Melbourne derby.

Jackson Bird

Not renowned for his short-form bowling, Bird has taken the new ball in the past three games for the Stars and claimed wickets in two of those three matches. His economy rate of 5.5 during that period makes him a viable option if you need a cheap bowler for Round 10. An economy rate of between five and six runs per over equates to an extra 15 points per game.

Josh Lalor

Lalor was in only 812 teams when he took 5-26 last round, a performance which netted 183 points for the Brisbane Heat seamer. His breakeven will be low and his price will continue to rise from here, so if you want him in Round 11 it’s time to jump on now.
