THE BASICS

■ You’ve got control of your own BBL team, with a $2 million salary cap to spend to pick 16 players (seven bowlers, seven batsmen, two wicketkeepers).

■ All-rounders (WKP-BAT or BAT-BWL) can be chosen in two positions.

■ Each of your players receives a score every round based on their real-life, game-day statistics. Teams who play twice in a round score points for both matches.

PICK A TEAM IN FIVE MINUTES

1. You have a $2 million salary cap and 16 players to pick. You need seven batsmen, two wicketkeepers and seven bowlers. Pick at least three players from Melbourne Stars as they play twice in Round 1 and scores from BOTH games count — this gives them a massive head start. However, the Stars have a bye in Round 3 so don’t go too hard. Pick a minimum of three Hobart Hurricanes players as they share a double in Round 2 with Adelaide Strikers, who have a Round 1 bye. The most popular players from the Stars and Hurricanes are:

■ Glenn Maxwell ($185,000, BAT-BWL, 63.1 per cent of teams)

■ Marcus Stoinis ($185,700, BAT-BWL, 56.4 per cent)

■ D’Arcy Short ($245,000, BAT-BWL, 42.9 per cent)

■ Adam Zampa ($184,100, BWL, 27.5 per cent)

■ Billy Stanlake ($75,400, BWL, 24.7 per cent)

■ Nathan Coulter-Nile ($138,600, BWL, 22.1 per cent)

■ Ben McDermott ($89,700, WKP-BAT, 19.4 per cent)

■ Peter Handscomb ($97,600, WKP-BAT, 16 per cent)

Glenn Maxwell plays twice in the opening round and is therefore a popular purchase.

2. Now you need a few cheapies. The most popular bargain buys (under $100,000) are:

■ Cameron Green ($62,500, BAT-BWL, 29.8 per cent of teams)

■ Billy Stanlake ($75,400, BWL, 24.7 per cent)

■ Will Pucovski ($42,000, BAT, 24.2 per cent)

■ Max Bryant ($67,800, BAT, 21.2 per cent)

■ Baxter Holt ($42,000, WKP-BAT 19.5 per cent)

■ Ben McDermott ($89,700, WKP-BAT, 19.4 per cent)

■ Jack Wildermuth ($62,500, BAT-BWL, 19.3 per cent)

■ Peter Handscomb ($97,600, WKP-BAT, 16 per cent)

■ Mitch Owen ($42,000, BAT-BWL, 15.5 per cent)

■ Ben Dunk ($62,500, WKP-BAT, 15 per cent)

■ Seb Gotch ($62,500, WKP-BAT, 13.2 per cent)

■ Ashton Turner ($62,500, BAT, 12.7 per cent)

3. Fill the rest of your side with your favourite players. Focus on all-rounders as they can rack up KFC SuperCoach BBL points with bat and ball — Maxwell is the prototype.

4. Don’t pick players who are named for Australia or Australia A: Australia A has a tour game against India from December 11-13, taking in Round 1-2 of KFC SuperCoach. It’s no use picking players who won’t feature in the BBL until after then. Matthew Wade, who is in the Test squad, features in 17 per cent of KFC SuperCoach BBL teams but won’t be available until mid-January.

5. Pick a captain. He earns double points. The best captaincy options are from the Stars as they play twice in Round 1, with Marcus Stoinis or Glenn Maxwell obvious choices. Don’t forget to choose a vice-captain whose score is doubled if your captain misses.

6. Choose your emergencies. You can name a back-up player in every position whose score counts if one of your 11 on-field players has a DNP (did not play).

7. Lock in your best starting XI. The scores of these players make up your total each round. It’s still important to have a strong bench as those players earn money and can boost your salary cap to get more big guns into your team. Player prices change every round based on their performances.

8. Join a league and enjoy the banter with your mates.

9. Tinker with your side as much as you like before Round 1 (there are unlimited trades at this point). During the season, you have three trades at the end of each round to build your side into a KFC SuperCoach powerhouse. Unused trades do not carry over to the next round. KFC SuperCoaches will have unlimited trades for Rounds 14-17 (BBL finals) as the number of teams still live in the competition reduces.
