Matthew Renshaw has gone from one of the brightest prospects in Australian cricket to being on the scrapheap in rapid time.

Despite having the BBL season of his life, Test reject Matthew Renshaw appears like he may have even further to go to get back in the selectors' minds.

Renshaw was dumped from the Queensland side for the Sheffield Shield return against Tasmania at the Gabba starting Friday with the rapid rise of Bryce Street taking the shine off the former Test star.

The veteran of 11 Test matches, Renshaw scored one century in 20 Test innings but was seen as a player of the future.

Scoring his first Test hundred at just 20, it appeared the world was at his feet.

But at 23-years-old, he appears to be at a crossroads with Queensland dropping the opener for the Street, who has just five first-class matches under his belt.

Street has impressed, scoring 281 runs so far this season at an average of 35.12 including a century and two half-centuries.

Renshaw in comparison has 182 runs at 20.22 with a highest score of 36, as the return of Michael Neser, Marnus Labuschagne and Joe Burns return to the squad.

It's a rapid fall from grace for Renshaw who had a surprising BBL, finishing as the second highest scorer for the Brisbane Heat with 348 runs at 29 in the tricky middle order, finishing 21st overall, with a strike rate of 129.85, shedding the tag of being a defensive batsman.

He even impressed with the ball, taking four wickets from nine overs in the competition at an average of 19.

But it wasn't enough to hold his place with The Courier Mail reporting he's set to be moved on from the Heat and is being linked to the Adelaide Strikers.

It's a huge fall from last summer, when Australian chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns revealed the panel was considering him for a place on the Ashes tour,  Renshaw faded, not even making the Australia A squad for a tour before the Ashes and making just 394 runs at 21 in the Sheffield Shield.

He has now gone 28 Shield innings' without scoring a century.

It's been a bumpy road for Renshaw following his first Test century.

He then went to India where he scored 232 runs in four matches at 29 - a feat that wasn't world beating but enough for the second best record on the Australian team.

Renshaw broke Clem Hill's 119-year-old Australian Test batting record, with the most runs before the age of 21.

But he was soon on the outer, dropped after a poor tour of Bangladesh, before plundering three tons in six matches for Somerset.

It kept Renshaw's name in the back of the minds of selectors and he received an opportunity following the ball tampering scandal.

Renshaw was set to be part of the Australian team for the two-Test series against Pakistan in Dubai before the 2018-19 summer but an injury scare put him on the sidelines.

The Queenslander copped a full blooded pull shot while standing at short leg in a tour match against Pakistan A.

The ball rebounded to captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who completed the dismissal, though the sixth of Lyon’s eight wickets was hardly cause for celebration.

Renshaw is expected to travel to Hobart to play for the Cricket Australia XI against the touring England Lions over the weekend.
