AUSTRALIA has finished day one of the second Ashes Test against England with their noses in front after Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh put on a valuable 47 runs in the final session under lights.

After England won the toss and elected to bowl, Australia finished a rain-affected day with 4-209 after 81 overs. Australia had control of the first day at dinner but England struck immediately after the break when Usman Khawaja was caught at gully by James Vince off the bowling of James Anderson for 53. But the biggest wicket to fall all day was Australian captain Steve Smith who was bowled by debutant Craig Overton for 40 after the ball nipped back and deflected off his pad to rattle the stumps. Handscomb and Marsh then came together at 4-161 and the two set about ensuring day one belonged to Australia. They batted smartly and saw off one final over from Anderson with the new ball. Handscomb went on the attack and hit five boundaries on his way past 30, then made it to 35 at stumps while Marsh made sure he would still be there when play resumes on Sunday unbeaten on 20. Stuart Broad has looked the most dangerous of the England bowlers but failed to take a wicket from his 19 overs while Anderson bowled 20 overs and finished with 1-44. A massive crowd of 55,317 attended the opening day’s play which was a record for the re-developed Adelaide Oval. The previous biggest crowd was 53,817 for this year’s AFL semi-final between Adelaide and Geelong.
