ADELAIDE Oval will, as expected, again make history by hosting the first day-night Ashes Test in December next year, Cricket Australia confirmed today.

As reported exclusively by The Advertiser’s Richard Earle last month, successful day-night Tests against New Zealand and South Africa, which brought in record crowds, meant the Oval was always favourite to hold the first pink-ball Ashes Test.

Australia has won its past four Test matches at the ground, with 125,993 fans attending the drought-breaking victory over South Africa this year. A year earlier, 123,736 attended the three-day Test between Australia and New Zealand.

The Ashes clash, from December 2-6, is expected to bring in even more patrons.

The Adelaide Oval match will follow the series opener at the Gabba from November 23.

After playing in Adelaide, the teams will square off in Perth, from December 14, Melbourne, from December 26 and Sydney, from January 4.

Adelaide Oval’s Australia Day fixture for 2018 has also been confirmed, with Australia hosting England in a one-day international on January 26.

SACA Chief Executive Keith Bradshaw today said confirmation of the first Ashes pink ball Test was “hugely exciting for South Australia”.

“Cricket fans have shown how much they love this format and we expect sellout crowds for the first Ashes day-night Test,” he said.

“Fans have voted with their feet the past two summers. The day-night Test in Adelaide is now the go-to destination for cricket fans worldwide.

“We expect a large number of ticket sales to come from interstate and overseas, which will drive South Australian tourism and create jobs.”
