‘Absolute screamer’: Women’s World Cup stunned by ‘catch of the tournament’

Cricket fans had their jaws on the floor when Deandra Dottin took a spectacular catch in the West Indies’ upset win at the World Cup.

The West Indies’ Deandra Dottin has taken an absolute screamer that will be extremely hard to beat as the catch of the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Dottin took the incredible catch in the West Indies’ seven-run upset win over England on Wednesday.

Batting the first, the Windies posted a solid total of 225 off its 50 overs thanks to strong contributions by Hayley Matthews (45), Shemaine Campbelle (66) and Chedean Nation (49).

In reply, England opener Lauren Windfield-Hill played a cut shot off Shamilia Connell, only for Dottin, who was fielding at backward point, to leap off the ground and pluck the ball out of mid-air in her left hand.

Viewers were in awe of the spectacular catch, with many already labelling Dottin’s athletic feat the catch of the World Cup.

“What a catch! Will you see any better?” commentator Alan Wilkins exclaimed.

“Absolute screamer.”

Deandra Dottin took an absolute screamer in the West Indies' win over England.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain was lost for words.

“That is incredible,” he said.

“That really is incredible.

“If you think of the chances that have been put down today, Dottin has just pulled off an absolute screamer.”

Cricket commentator Reema Malhotra tweeted: “Calling it catch of the tournament! #flygirl.”

Dottin’s catch was just what the West Indies needed as they steadily worked their way through England’s batting line-up, taking wickets at regular intervals.

While several England players made starts, none went on to register a half century as the Poms fell just short of the required total.

Connell starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 3/38 off her full complement of 10 overs as the West Indies secured a thrilling victory.
