THE junior tradition is to peroxide their hair but Australia’s newest senior world record holders are now growing mullets and rocking them on the Gold Coast this week.
Alex Porter, Kelland O’Brien and Sam Welsford have gone for the short back-and-sides with a party at the back hairstyle for the Commonwealth Games and it may just have made them more aerodynamic.
The trio was part of Australia’s team pursuit that won gold in world record time at the Anna Meares Velodrome on Thursday night.
Asked whether they were rocking the mullet to raise money, 19-year-old O’Brien said “I’m not sure if we’re raising money but it’s breaking world records”.
Porter, 22, said his hairstyle was a matter of national pride.
“It was a deal with my brother to grow a mullet a few months ago, what is more Aussie than a mullet?” he said.
Porter and O’Brien are both former junior world champions where Australia’s tradition for years has been to bleach their hair bright blonde for the world titles.
It seems now they’ve created a senior tradition as well.
