Tens of thousands of people laced up for the Westpac City-Bay fun run — presented by the Sunday Mail — and brought a range of emotions with them as they crossed the finish line.

While 12km run race winners Jack Bruce and Lisa Weightman celebrated their triumphs, there were people who were just happy to have made the distance — some with a personal best time and smile to match.

Some used the event as a chance to prepare for overseas marathons, others showed off extravagant costumes while many raced for causes and charities.

Those running for charity included Robert Brennan who was raising money for SIDS & Kids SA — a charity that gave so much to his family after losing his son Max at 21 months.

“We lost our son Max in 2012 and they have supported us through that time,” Mr Brennan, 51, of Kurralta Park, said.

“We ran the first year we lost Max and we have been running ever since to keep Max’s memory alive.”

This year there were more than 26,000 entrants — on par with last year — running or walking 12km, 6km, 3km or a 21km half marathon.

So far, about $334,000 has been raised for a number of charities.

While the event was largely incident free, before the race a competitor was struck by a car on North Tce, but she did not appear injured and walked away, SA Police said.

Darren Hayward, 46, of Pennington, was using his run as preparation for the New York marathon in November.

He ran a personal best of one hour and 39 minutes, saying that he “went hard” to get the result.

“Today was really good, I got to about 2km and I was like I am going for it,” Mr Hayward said.

Julien Veyrunes, a tourist from France, said finishing the race was a priority, but not without a fancy dress.

“I always needed to have a dress otherwise it is not funny,” Mr Veyrunes, 24, said.

Jason Castleman, 47, of Hackham, dressed up as the South Adelaide Football Club mascot — Kingston the panther — and was raising money for the Sammy D foundation.

“Someone told me they would see me in an ambulance at the end of the race, but it is easy (to run in) and you just pace yourself,” he said.

“I promised if I got to the end I would do 10 push ups, and I have done them.”

Male winner Bruce, a first time City-Bay runner from Brisbane, secured gold with a time of 34.56, despite an injury in May and June.

“It is a good race, a good event and there were lots of people on Anzac Hwy, which is always good to see,” Mr Bruce, 25, of Brisbane, said.

“The highway, going straight down for so long, can be so mentally draining so you have got to keep focused.”

Female winner Lisa Weightman, who first ran the City-Bay about 10 years ago, finished with a time of 38.15 and is now preparing for the Chicago Marathon.

“It has been a bit warm, but we could not have asked for a better day,” Ms Weightman, 40, of Melbourne, said.

“It is nice to know I still have a bit of speed in the legs … we have been running 175km plus for about six or seven weeks.”

The first South Australian male over the line was Adrian Potter with a time of 35.50, and the first female was Tara Palm at 39.10.

Race Director Joe Stevens said the race probably lost competitors to the One Night Stand concert event in Lucindale, but was still pleased with the turnout.
