CDRL club: We’re going to play

A Cairns and District Rugby League club president is adamant they will play rugby league this year, even if it means joining a different league temporarily.

Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks president Jason Fasano is adamant the club will play rugby league this year, even if it means joining a different league temporarily.

Fasano said the Cairns and District Rugby League’s back-to-back premiers had been looking for ways to get back on the field ever since the CDRL made a decision to cancel the season on June 1.

He said it wasn’t a question of if the Sharks would play in 2020, but where.

“We were always going to play, one way or the other,” Fasano said.

“At the moment, we’ve got two options.

“We’ve got the Three Rivers competition up with Wujal Wujal, Hopevale, Coen, Pormpuraaw and Cooktown, and then obviously the CDRL is our other option.”

“If the CDRL doesn’t go ahead, we’re definitely going to be looking at joining the Three Rivers competition, but if the CDRL does go ahead, we’ll more than likely go that way.

“We’ve actually organised a catch-up at the clubhouse (this afternoon), so we’ll have a chat with the players to see which way they want to go.”

Fasano said discussions regarding the Three Rivers competition, much like the CDRL, were in “preliminary stages”.

“I’ve spoken to the people involved and they’ve indicated they’d love to get a competition going,” he said.

“There’s going to be a few hurdles, but it’s no different to anything else.

“We’re going to get on the paddock one way or another this year, that’s for sure.”
