Cairns women’s cricket international moved to Brisbane

The Australian women’s cricket team will not be playing a one-day international against New Zealand in Cairns this October, as was originally scheduled.

The Australian women’s cricket team will not be playing a one-day international against New Zealand in Cairns this October, as was originally scheduled.

Cricket Australia announced the upcoming six-game trans-Tasman series, comprising three ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals, would be held in its entirety at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The T20s will be played on September 26, 27 and 30, with the ODIs to be played on October 3, 5 and 7.

Cairns’ Cazalys Stadium was scheduled to host an ODI between our Aussie women’s T20 World Champions and traditional rivals New Zealand on October 7, as part of Cricket Australia’s initial international schedule for the 2020-21 summer, released in May.

The women’s fixture was to be the second match of a blockbuster international double header, with the Australian men’s team to host reigning T20 World Champions the West Indies in a T20I on Tuesday, October 6.

Both games were part of three-game series between the sides scheduled to begin at Townsville’s Riverway Stadium on October 4-5 and finish at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast on October 9-10.

“Originally we had intended to play these games in regional Queensland and we thank our stakeholders in Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast for all of their hard work, and understanding during this period,” said Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson.

“We will continue to work closely with Cricket Australia to identify and attract top class cricket to regional venues in Queensland and look forward to rewarding that support in the future.”

Cricket Australia made the decision to postpone the men’s T20I series between Australia and the West Indies earlier this month.

The matches were to be played as warm-ups to the T20 World Cup, which was postponed in July due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The series is set to coincide with the rescheduled World Cup in Australia in 2022.
