Cairns Netball: Sister act leading the way for goal-seeking Saints

Kayla and Amber Bradtberg will play a big role if Saints are to make finals this season, according to coach Gerri Bray.

The teenage sister act and Cairns Pythons representatives have been standouts for Saints through the first six rounds, stepping up in the absence of key players Victoria Davis-Dods (injury) and Amanda Cole (pregnancy).

“Amber’s my youngest, but I will say she’s got one of the best netball brains,” Bray said.

“She’s very quiet and unassuming but you take her off the court and you notice it.

“She can fly under the radar, but she’s a workhorse.

“If we didn’t have her on the team, we’d be lost.”

She said older sibling Kayla had taken a “massive leap” in her own personal game.

Saints will adopt a simple game plan for the last four rounds of the season — goals, and lots of them.

The red, white and black kept themselves in contention for a top-four finish and a Senior Division 1 finals berth with a 42-36 win over South Cairns Cutters on Wednesday night.

Both teams sit on 10 competition points, with Cutters holding fourth spot with the better for-and-against of 93.3, compared to Saints’ 69.5.

“We want to make finals,” Bray said.

“Obviously, you’ve got your three top teams, but we’re hoping to slide in there.

“We’re going to come out, especially against Tigers next week, and just try and throw as many goals in as we can.

“We’re just going to focus on getting the ball in the hoop to try and get into finals.”
