Saints skipper Teneal Kelly has tipped a couple of young gun teammates to fire when Cairns Hockey’s winter season resumes this weekend.

Saints will restart their A-grade women’s campaign against the ladder-leading Souths on Saturday night, where both teams will be looking to continue their pre-COVID form and keep their undefeated streaks intact.

Saints will put faith in rising stars Liv McArthur and Sophie Glover as they look to repeat 2018’s premiership-winning heroics.

Kelly said she was confident the young pair would add another level to their games in what will be their respective third and second seasons of A-grade hockey.

“They have shown great development over the last few years and just keep getting better every season,” she said.

“Liv plays in the midfield and she is quite skilful, while Sophie is another of our young girls coming through who plays up front and is quite quick and dynamic.

“They’ll definitely be ones to watch this year.”

Saints started their season with a 3-2 victory over Brothers, followed by a 2-all draw with Trinity Stingers, before the competition was suspended after two rounds as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Defending premiers Souths conceded just one goal before the hiatus, defeating Trinity Stingers 2-0 and Brothers 3-1.

“We started really well this season so hopefully we can pick up where we left off,” Kelly said.

“We’ve been working hard in the second pre-season to get good touches on the ball before we head out against Souths.

“They’ve always been a strong team and it’s definitely going to be a hard game, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“It will be a good way to restart the season and will give us a good idea of where we’re at.”

After claiming the premiership in 2018, Saints failed to make the grand final in last season’s follow-up campaign and were eliminated by Trinity Stingers in the semi-final.

Kelly said the team would use 2019’s shortcomings as motivation in the new season.
